The defender, who lost his right leg in the war, suffered severe multiple injuries to the lower left part of his body and survived two strokes, was able to stand on his surviving leg for the first time in 14 months.

38-year-old Volodymyr Kaida comes from Shakhtarsk, Donetsk region. In 2014, the man moved to Mykolaiv, and later joined the marines and signed a one-year contract, the Nezlamni center reports.

In 2022, Volodymyr was mobilized. He served as part of the 79th separate amphibious assault brigade. He was seriously wounded in the Donetsk direction.

“One of the shells exploded next to Volodymyr’s brother. He rushed to help his friend when another flight happened. My brother died. And Volodymyr’s pelvis and both lower limbs were crushed by mine fragments“, the center says.

The right leg of a seriously wounded soldier was amputated in Dnipro. Later, in a number of medical institutions, his left leg, which was also badly damaged, was saved.

Also, the soldier had a completely crushed hip joint. The tissues of the pelvis were infected and the wound did not heal for a long time. The already difficult condition was complicated by two strokes.

In half a year, Volodymyr was referred for further treatment in Lviv.

The doctors assure that Volodymyr will walk

“When I first saw this patient, he was lying down and couldn’t even talk and had a lot of complications“, orthopedic traumatologist Oleg Ivaniv recalls the defender’s condition.

In Lviv, Volodymyr began to speak. And for the first time in many months, he went outside in a wheelchair.

“In order for Volodymyr to be able to stand on his left leg and later receive a right limb prosthesis, specialists had to deal with his hip joint. Because this patient has – a difficult case. Due to long-term infection and tissue scarring, such a surgical intervention should be carried out in the usual way – dangerously. The infection could return“, the center notes.

Therefore, the doctors decided to operate in a non-standard way – from another point of access to the joint, where there are no scars. Endoprosthesis of the hip joint was successful.

Two weeks after the intervention, Volodymyr stood on his feet for the first time in 14 months.

A long rehabilitation awaits the defender.

“Before prosthetics of the right limb, he needs to develop the fossilized joints and atrophied muscles from more than a year in bed. One thing can be said for sure – Volodymyr will walk“, the center assures.
