At the award ceremony, which took place on December 7, L’Oréal Ukraine announced the names of three laureates, the winners of the fifth season of the Ukrainian L’Oréal-UNESCO Award “For Women in Science”.

The Ukrainian award has been implemented by L’Oréal Ukraine since 2018 and is part of the global L’Oréal-UNESCO program “For Women in Science”.

The purpose of the award is to support and celebrate talented women scientists, to encourage young women to choose scientific professions and to help them in their careers. Since the award was established in Ukraine, 12 women scientists have already been honored, one of whom became a laureate of the international award.

In this extremely difficult time for our country, the award “For women in science” takes on a special significance and becomes even more relevant because of that.

“Today, science, like our entire country, is going through extremely difficult times. A significant number of institutes, research centers and laboratories on the territory of Ukraine were destroyed.

Because of the Russian invasion, many scientists were forced to leave their homes and their native country and go abroad in order to have the opportunity to do science. That is why the restoration of the award this year is of particular importance.

We want to support our female scientists, give them the opportunity to realize their scientific talents. They need recognition from all of us in their native Ukraine for the future development and restoration of our country.

After all, Ukraine needs science, and science needs women!” – says Kateryna Zakharash, Director of Corporate Communications at L’Oréal Ukraine.

This year, the organizing committee of the Award received more than 100 applications from female scientists representing different cities of Ukraine and different fields of science.

The largest number of applications were received from the cities of millions: Kyiv, Lviv and Kharkiv, and chemistry became the most popular field, followed by medicine and biology.

Each application was evaluated by an independent jury, which includes leading scientists and scientists of Ukraine — academics who are recognized specialists in STEM fields.

Jury members selected ten finalists to participate in interviews in October 2023. Based on the results of the interviews, three winners were selected. Each laureate will receive a monetary award in the amount of 300,000 hryvnias for the implementation of her scientific activity. They became:

Khrystyna Hnatenko

Natalia Stasiuk
