A prototype “brain-like” chip could make AI more efficient and less energy-consuming, IBM said in a comment to the BBC. The company hopes that this development will make personal computers and artificial intelligence devices more efficient and less harmful to the environment. The company explained that the efficiency of the chip depends on components that work like connections in the human brain. Instead, IBM uses memory resistors (memristors), electrical components that can simultaneously calculate and store information. They can work like a brain, where information is transmitted from neuron to neuron. “Interconnected memristors can form a network that resembles the human brain,” University of Surrey professor Ferrante Neri told the BBC. If such developments come to market, humanity can get high-performance smartphones that will hold a charge much longer than current models, thanks to AI chips. It will be recalled that previously Elon Musk’s company Neuralink developed a brain chip that is supposed to treat neurological diseases.
