There may be unexhumed bodies: they will not be able to quickly create a military cemetery in Bykivno

The “Bykivnyan Graves” Reserve stated that it is impossible to build a military memorial cemetery in the Bykivnyan Forest in a short period of time, because there may still be old burials there. This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy with reference to information from the reserve. “Part of the territory of the Bykivnyansky forest, on which the National Military Memorial Cemetery was planned, is still completely unexplored and may contain a certain number of undiscovered burials. Considering this, as well as a number of other objective reasons, the construction of a memorial cemetery on the territory of Bykivnyansky of the forest in the stated shortest time is impossible,” the message says. On the territory of the Bykivnyan forest, there was a secret special section of the NKVD of the Ukrainian SSR, where the victims of mass repressions, who were shot in Kyiv in 1937-1941, were buried. According to historians, 30,000 to 40,000 bodies of victims of Stalinist repressions were buried in the forest. Photo: “Bykivnian Graves” reserve. The Ministry of Culture says that the area of the International Memorial to the Victims of Totalitarianism of 1937-1941, built in 2012, does not cover all possible burial places on the territory of the reserve. And the search and exhumation works, which were carried out in the territory of the Bykivnyan forest in 1971, 1988-1989, 2001-2012, were not total and not everywhere thorough. That is, not far from the territory where they want to create a military cemetery, there may still be many unexplored burials and unexhumed bodies. “Since burials can be located in different places on the territory of the Bykivnyan forest, it is quite likely that the retreated borders of the NVMK from the Memorial will not be enough to guarantee the preservation of mass graves of victims of political repression during the possible construction of the NVMK. Thus, the selected site needs a thorough archaeological investigation, including thorough search and exhumation works,” the reserve says. It is impossible to build a cemetery in the shortest possible time, given the “objective need for larger areas” and the need to survey the territory. We will remind you that in October of last year, the KMDA was instructed to develop a site plan for the location of the National Military Memorial Cemetery in the Lysa Gora tract, but activists and the government opposed it. They decided to create a memorial cemetery for fallen soldiers in Bykivni, where the National Historical and Memorial Reserve “Bykivnia Graves” is already located.
