Flamingos flew to Bulgaria from the Tuzlivski Lymani National Park in Odesa, but more than 30,000 galagazis – goose-like birds of the duck family – flew in from different places.
This was announced by Ivan Rusev, Doctor of Biological Sciences and head of the research department of “Tuzlivskyi Lymaniv”.
He noted that the following species of ducks are currently the most numerous in the estuaries of the Black Sea: galagos, cinders, crested grebe, little teal and mallard. According to Rusev, galagos do not fly far from their nesting places – the Black Sea estuaries.
Currently, there are more than 30,000 galagas in the two estuaries. We are talking about the Shagana estuaries and the southern part of Alibey.

The number of Galagas in the estuaries depends on the availability of feed. In inland waters, they forage afloat, but, unlike most ducks, they do not dive.
“Galagas’ diet consists mainly of food of animal origin. It feeds on small crustaceans, molluscs, and in winter – vegetative parts of plants and algae. Artemia crustaceans (Artemia salina) and larvae of some dipterans make up a significant part of the diet. But the biggest in his food now – these are the tones of the red moth“, Rusev notes.

Galagaz is a trusting bird and a real feathered decoration of the “Tuzliv estuaries”. His observations were even included in the famous book by Nobel laureate Konrad Lorenz.
Birds remain faithful to each other throughout their lives |
Although mating games and fights are observed in Galagas every year, partners remain faithful to each other throughout their lives. Sexual maturity in females occurs in the second year of life, and in males at the age of more than three years. Fights for the right to territory often occur between males, says the biologist.

“An interesting fact is that the nest of Galagazas is often made in a burrow, using the old burrows of mammals – jackals, foxes, badgersRusev adds.
We will remind you that earlier we wrote that red-listed tropical birds had arrived in the Tuzliv estuaries national park.
Also, a male of a rare bird with rings on its legs and thousands of bee-eating birds were spotted in the reserve.
