The jubilee, 80th film festival opened in Venice. The ceremony began with the presentation of the “Golden Lion of St. Mark” for the contribution to world cinema and career achievements to the author of the film “The Night Porter” (1974) Liliane Kavanagh. For details, contact the correspondent of Radio Svoboda.
This year, the Venice Festival, the first among all its competitors, rose to rank number 80. It is indeed older than all the rest. Enthusiasts of the “Venetian Classics” program will reminisce about the cinematographer’s past. They will be able to watch the author’s version of “Andrei Rublev” by Andrei Tarkovsky, “Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors” by Sergei Parajanov, “Days of Harvest” by Terrence Malick and “The Hunt” by Carlos Saura. Several old paintings illustrate the theme of collaboration between outstanding directors and actors – “Portrait of Gina” by Orson Welles with Gina Lollobrigida, “The Most Beautiful” by Lukina Visconti with Anna Magnani, “Creations” by Agnès Varda with Catherine Deneuve.
One of the most vivid examples of such cooperation is the work of Charlotte Rampling with Liliana Kavanagh on the female image in the film “The Night Porter”. The most touching moment of the opening ceremony was the presentation of the “Golden Lion” for the career of 90-year-old Liliane Kavanagh. Charlotte Rampling took the stage to present the award. The meeting of two outstanding women was a great start to the festival, and on the same day Kavanagh’s new film “The Order of Time” was shown. One of the main roles in this film about the “end of the world” experienced by humanity was played by Ksenia Rappoport.
Several more veterans are presented with new works: these are primarily Woody Allen and Roman Polansky. Pervyj shot the picture “The Great Irony” in Paris with a group of French actors. And the second staged “The Palace” – a grotesque about a New Year’s gathering of millionaires and partygoers; this is another version of “the end of the world”: a topic that clearly excites today’s cinema. In the international cast of this film, along with John Cleese, Fanny Ardan and Mickey Rourke, there are Russians – Anton Pampushny and Alexander Petrov, as well as Ilya Volokh as the Russian ambassador. But another veteran, William Frydkin, did not live to see the premiere of his film “Military Tribunal in the Case of the Mutiny at the Kane”: it will also be shown in Venice out of competition.
The main competition program makes a double impression. Almost half of it is made up of biopics, a fairly conservative genre. “Ferrari” by Michael Mann tells about the famous racer and the founder of the iconic brand. “Maestro” by Bradley Cooper is about the composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” is about Elvis Presley’s wife and himself. And even “The Count” by Pablo Larraín is also a unique biopic, whose hero is Augusto Pinochet, portrayed as an immortal vampire.
On the other hand, films by trendy and radical directors such as Yorgos Lanthimos, Ryusuke Hamaguta and Michel Franco participate in the Venice competition. Finally, the program includes fantastic thrillers, comics and noirs – “Premonition” by Bertrand Bonello, “Dogman” by Luc Besson and “The Killer” by David Fincher.
As always, Italian cinema is presented to the maximum in the competition, and the Italian film is also shown at the opening. festival This is “Captain” de Angeles. He raises the problem of ethics and humanism in the era of exterminating and fanatical wars. Submarine commander Salvatore Todaro sinks an enemy ship, and then, contrary to the instructions of his superiors, rescues his crew members. The story takes place at the beginning of the Second World War, but is quite relevant in today’s military and political context.
