In Ukraine, the channels of the Prut and Siret rivers will be cleared
Yaroslav Zelenchuk, WWF-Ukraine
The rivers Prut and Siret, which are tributaries of the Danube, will begin to be cleared in 2024 to recreate a free flow.
“General cleaning” will take place within the framework of the European project “Open Rivers”, which was initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature Ukraine (WWF-Ukraine) and the Basin Management of Water Resources.
First, a comprehensive study will be conducted, during which they plan to identify all types of barriers that impede the water flow. If possible, they will be removed to restore free flow throughout the basin.
Representatives of WWF-Ukraine explained that rivers that have a continuous flow from source to mouth are able to support the ecosystem and recover better.
The free flow of rivers also contributes to:
- improving the ecological condition of surface water bodies;
- increasing biodiversity;
- preservation of settlements;
- reducing vulnerability to climate change;
- reducing the risks of floods and droughts.

“Healthy freshwater ecosystems play an important role in providing society with a wide range of services, including water purification, carbon sequestration, food supply and protection against floods and droughts“, – added in the organization.
As WWF-Ukraine explained, this project is an important step in ensuring sustainable management of water resources, taking into account the needs of local communities and the environment.

The Prut and Siret river subbasins are transboundary, but most of them are located in the Ukrainian Carpathians.
I think about a million people live in the basins of the tributaries. Due to this, there is a noticeable anthropogenic load – from the energy sector, various industries, agriculture and urbanization.
Conservationists also remind that more than 77 species of fish live in the Prut and Siret rivers. Among them are migratory (Danube salmon, brook trout) and endangered species (sterlet, brown bear, minnow, grayling, Ukrainian lamprey).
