At the award ceremony Women in Arts. The Resistance On March 6, the achievements of women in the field of culture and art, as well as their contribution to the approaching victory of Ukraine, were celebrated. This is the fifth anniversary award from the Ukrainian Institute and UN Women in Ukraine.

The slogan of the award was the phrase – “Until the storm is over”. It reflected the main idea of ​​recognizing the resistance shown by Ukrainian artists and the Ukrainian people in general. Also, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the title Women in Arts has been added to the subtitle The Resistance.

“The theme of this year’s award is Resistance, the resistance that Ukrainian women are putting up against Russian aggression, amplifying women’s voices and calling for a change in the perception of Ukraine in the world. I am grateful to each of them, whose tireless work motivates the world community to action. Ukrainian artists use all their talent and all available art tools to call the world to action and support Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression“, he commented Dmytro KulebaMinister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the award.

This year, the presenters of the ceremony were a journalist, a poet and a screenwriter Oleksandra Gontar and stand-up comedian, volunteer Vasyl Baydak. At the beginning of the event, they honored the memory of female artists who died as a result of Russian aggression with a moment of silence.

“Today, we not only admire the steadfast spirit of Ukrainian women in art, but also honor the talented women who died as a result of Russian aggression. This is a moment of great pride, deep sorrow and solidarity with the Ukrainian people“, she said Sabine Fraser GuneshRepresentative of UN Women in Ukraine.

The prize winners were:

• Women in the visual arts – the artist Kateryna Buchachka
• Women in music – a singer Jamala
• Women in the performing arts – director Oksana Dmitrieva
• Women in cinema – a documentary filmmaker Alisa Kovalenko
• Women in literature – poet and marine, laureate of “UP-100” Yaryna Chornoguz
• Women in cultural management – director of the Memorial Museum of Totalitarian Regimes “Territory of Terror” Olga Honchar
• Women in cultural journalism, criticism and research – editor-in-chief of the Suspilne Kultura website, researcher of Ukrainian art Kateryna Yakovlenko
• Special mention – veteran, paramedic, one of the leaders of the public organization “Women’s Veteran Movement” Kateryna Prymak

About the Women in Arts Award

Women in Arts is an independent award founded in 2019 by the Ukrainian Institute and UN Women in Ukraine as part of the HeForShe solidarity movement for gender equality. The purpose of the award is to draw attention to the achievements of women artists and popularize Ukrainian culture in the country and the world.

Among the laureates of past years are Oksana Zabuzhko, Sofia Andruhovych, Irma Vitovska-Vantsa, Alevtina Kakhidze, Iryna Tsylyk and other.

The winners are awarded statuettes in the form of woven hands by a Ukrainian sculptor Maria Kulikovska. In her opinion, this silhouette symbolizes support, protection and women’s work.

Candidates for Women In Arts are evaluated by specialists from the field of culture, representatives of the public sector and independent institutions. The board and jury included 42 people, more details about each of them it says on the website awards

The event in 2024 was supported by the Governments of Sweden and Japan, as well as the Women’s Fund for Peace and Humanitarian Aid of the United Nations.
