The Council supported the introduction of 4 compulsory subjects on the state final attestation (DPA) in the first reading. From next year, not only mathematics and the Ukrainian language will become mandatory, but also the history of Ukraine and a foreign language. The relevant draft law No. 9046 was adopted by the Verkhovna Rada on April 10, People’s Deputy Nataliya Pipa reported. “Bill No. 9046 on 4 subjects for DPA from next year was adopted in the first reading! I remind you – Ukrainian language, mathematics, history of Ukraine and a foreign language,” Pipa wrote on Facebook. Photo: VIPDesignUSA/Depositphotos The draft law amends the Law of Ukraine “On Comprehensive General Secondary Education”, in particular, proposes to supplement the second paragraph of the fifth part of Article 17. According to the draft law, this part will read as follows: “Each student must pass the state final certification for each level of full general secondary education in the state language, mathematics, history of Ukraine, foreign language (except for the language of the state recognized by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine as an aggressor state or an occupying state)”. The former head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance Volodymyr Viatrovych wrote that this decision can solve two important tasks in the field of school education. “First, to return to the school the full-fledged state final attestation (DPA), which was canceled three years ago under the pretext of covid. Second, to make the DPA mandatory for all students not only in mathematics and the Ukrainian language, but also in a foreign language and history of Ukraine. This year’s situation, when history was thrown out as a mandatory subject from the multitest, and a separate DPA does not exist at all, should become a thing of the past. If the draft law is adopted as a whole, a full-fledged DPA in schools will be restored as early as 2024, and the exam with of the history of Ukraine will be its integral component,” he wrote. At the same time, the administrator of the group “News of higher education” Andriy Chernykh criticizes the innovation. “The editorial staff of the draft law clearly says that in the 4th grade there will be a DPA on the History of Ukraine, but in the 1st-4th grades they do not study a separate subject of the History of Ukraine,” Chernykh wrote. He believes that the introduction of mandatory DPA in history and a foreign language also carries a risk for the natural sciences. “The exclusion of natural sciences, especially physics and chemistry, from the subjects presented at the DPA (and for 11th grade graduates this is the format of external examinations) is an indirect but effective step towards weakening the defense capability of Ukraine for the coming years, as we are depriving our country of the opportunity to further develop own weapons, and not wait for help from Western partners,” Chernykh previously wrote. We will remind you that this year in Ukraine, DPA-2023 was canceled for the 4th and 9th grades.
