On Sunday, March 17an exhibition of Ukrainian futurism opened in Drogenbos “Futuromarenia: Ukraine and the avant-garde”. A limited series of catalogs dedicated to the works of Ukrainian artists was released for the event: Davyd Burlyuk, Oleksandra Exter, Vadym Meller, Viktor Palmov and Vasyl Yermylov.

The exhibition opened in the contemporary art museum FeliX Art & Eco Museum and presents about 100 works of painting, graphics, book design and scenography. It is also complemented by documentary materials and video installations “Poe painting” and “Our 1920s shot in the 2020s”.

“Futuromarennia” turned into a series of projects: Art Arsenal in Kyiv – KUMU in Estonia and now – FeliX Art & Eco Museum in Belgium. Scaling up, “Futuromarenya” changes every time, but it remains a story about Ukraine. We offer the viewer not only aesthetic pleasure, but also an opportunity for their own research, the source of which is an art object immersed in a historical context”, commented the co-curator of the exhibition Olga Melnyk.
In the comment for UP. Culture she said that the audience of the museum in Belgium is different from the previous experience of the presentation of “Futuromarenya” in Ukraine and Estonia.
“There are two audiences around this museum that are new to us: firstly, it is the local community, which has a tradition of not just visiting museums, but spending time there, having entertainment and workshops. At the opening of the exhibition, children baked bread in a form borrowed from Vasyl Yermilom’s work “Bulka”, while parents visited the exhibition.
Secondly, it is an intellectual artistic community that gathers around the museum. During the same day, discussions arose among them, which related to the identity of individual artists and manifestations of the avant-garde in Ukraine. And indeed, experts were surprised by how many outstanding works of famous artists are preserved in Ukraine“, the curator added
In the catalog for the exhibition, the publications of Ukrainian and foreign researchers of futurism, who advised the curators, were collected. It also includes materials that were directly included in the exhibition at the Art Arsenal from October 15, 2021 to January 30, 2022.

In addition, the publication also focuses on the topic of typography – the identity of the “Futuromarennya” catalog is flexible and dynamic, as the art director of the Art Arsenal added Lera Guevska: “The identity of the exhibition and the catalog are inspired by the typographic techniques of the 1920s and the plasticity of futuristic painting. It is important for us to reinterpret our heritage and express it in modern design, maintaining the durability of the style“.

Exhibition “Futuromarenia”, according to the words of the Art Arsenal, has become one of the most popular cultural spaces in Ukraine in recent years – more than 17,000 people visited it.
“Under the influence of circumstances, the “Futuromarenya” project, which took place in Kyiv at the end of 2021 and at the beginning of 2022, underwent significant changes. These reasons are quite tragic and forced us to shift the focus of our research, focusing on the problem of appropriation of Ukrainian cultural heritage by Russian culture. Previously, it was also exhibited at the KUMU Art Museum in Tallinn under the updated title “Futuromarenia: Ukraine and the Avant-Garde”.
The Belgian project was implemented FeliX Art & Eco Museum and Art Arsenal. They became partners of the exhibition National Art Museum of Ukraine, Dovzhenko Center, Lviv Museum of the History of Religion, Central State Archive-Museum of Literature and Art of Ukraine and other organizations.
