Apollo magazine named the winners of its Apollo Awards 2023. This year, the exposition was recognized as the exhibition of the year “In the epicenter of the storm: modernism in Ukraine 1900-1930s” from the National Art Museum of Ukraine, which was exhibited at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid.
In general, the winners were determined in seven categories: Exhibition of the Year, Digital Innovation of the Year, Artist of the Year, Purchase of the Year, Book of the Year, Museum Opening of the Year and Person of the Year.
“Just a few months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, this traveling exhibition and a 248-page book about it were presented at the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid. The lion’s share of the exhibition’s 70 exhibits left Kyiv a few hours before the most intense aerial bombardment of the city to date“, the magazine noted.

The organizers of the award emphasized that the exhibition would not have taken place without the work of art critic and curator Kostyantyn Akinsha and the team of the National Art Museum of Ukraine headed by Yulia Lytvynets.

“At stake was not only the preservation of the material cultural heritage of Ukraine, but also the national identity that it represents. The country had already suffered significant losses in literature and art during the Soviet purges… Even more was subsequently “lost” when cosmopolitan but Ukrainian-born or raised artists such as David Burliuk, Oleksandra Ekster and Kazimir Malevich were included in the narrative Russian avant-garde“, Apollo added.

The museum in Madrid became the first place for the exhibition. Then it was transferred to the Ludwig Museum in Cologne (Germany). Until January 24, 2024, the exhibition can be seen at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium (Brussels).
