On Wednesday, December 13, the finalists and winners of the Chapter of the Yury Shevelev Prize for the best Ukrainian essays of 2023 were announced.

So finalists of the Shevelyov Prize 2023 became:

  • Kateryna Zarembo“Sunrise of the Ukrainian Sun” (Boat)
  • Mykhed Oleksandr“Job’s Call Sign. Chronicles of the Invasion” (Old Lion Publishing House)
  • Petrosanyak Halyna“Our Neighbor Albert Hoffman” (Publishing House 21)

In addition, several special awards will be presented this year. Special award of the Chapter awarded for the book “69 spices for the Heart” by Andriy Gudyma (posthumously) “for a taste for life and words, with deep gratitude to Hero for the rank.”

He will receive another special award for the book “Under someone else’s shadow” Andriy Sodomora – “for the virtuoso continuation of the tradition of Ukrainian neoclassicists in essay writing”.

A special Radio Kultura award will also be presented. Based on the work of the winner in this nomination, a radio version of the work will be created, which will then be played on the air.

The name of the laureate will traditionally be announced on Yury Shevelyov’s birthday – December 17.

About the award

Prize named after Yuriy Shevelyov was founded in 2013. Named in honor of Yury Shevelyov, who started modern Ukrainian essay writing.

Awarded once a year to a Ukrainian author for artistic and scientific essay writing. Artistic or scientific essays by Ukrainian authors published in paper form during the calendar year are accepted for consideration.

The laureates of the Prize in previous years were Taras Prokhasko (“One and the same”), Andriy Portnov (“Stories for home use”), Kostyantyn Moskalets (“Scares”), Oleksandr Boychenko (“More/Less”), Vakhtang Kebuladze (“Charunki destiny”), Andriy Lyubka (“Saudade”), Volodymyr Yermolenko (“Fluid ideologies”), Diana Klochko (“65 Ukrainian masterpieces.
