Breath sensors: technologies will appear in the US that will prevent drunk driving

Auto safety regulators in the US have taken the first step toward combating drunk driving with innovation.

They said they would oblige automakers to introduce special technologies that would prevent drivers from driving while intoxicated, Reuters reports.

There are a number of potential technologies that could prevent drunk driving. In particular, breath or touch sensors to detect alcohol.

Another option is to use cameras to monitor eye movements to determine if a driver is under the influence.

In 2021, Congress directed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to implement the technology to try to prevent more than 10,000 road deaths annually.

The law requires adoption of the new safety standard by November 2024, if the technology is ready.

However, NHTSA must ensure that the technology works before requiring its use.

Then car manufacturers will be given at least 3 years to implement it.

We will remind, earlier in Moldova, a new punishment was invented for drivers who got behind the wheel while intoxicated. It is about working in a morgue.
