Almost the entire protected area of the island burned down, and the fate of the animals is unknown. This was reported by the director of the Dzharylgatsk National Nature Park, Iryna Sabashenko, in a comment to “News of the Azov Region” from “Radio Liberty”. According to her, the fire started precisely because the occupying Russian authorities set up a training ground on the island. It started around August 4-5 and ended on August 11. “Most likely, there was a fire in the vegetation cover, that’s why it happened. We burned almost the entire protected zone, the main part of all valuable species, all parts of steppe ecosystems, rare species that are listed in the “Green Book of Ukraine” are concentrated there, and the fate of animals is not known to us at all,” said the head of the national park.
