The first human death from bird flu occurred in China. The strain of the virus that caused the death of a 56-year-old woman from Guangdong province is rare in humans, Reuters reports citing WHO. The Guangdong Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported a third infection late last month, but did not provide details of the woman’s death. According to WHO, the patient had numerous diseases, as well as contact with live poultry. Samples collected from the food market the woman visited before the illness tested positive for influenza A(H3). As stated by the WHO, this could be the source of infection. All three cases of the disease occurred in China, the first two cases were reported last year. H3N8 is rare in humans and very common in birds, where it causes almost no signs of illness. The virus also infects other mammals. “Based on available information, this virus does not have the ability to spread easily from person to person, and therefore the risk of its spread among people at the national, regional and international levels is considered low,” says the WHO.
