During the year of the full-scale invasion, ecologists recorded 131 fires on the temporarily occupied Kinburn Peninsula, located in Kherson Oblast and Mykolaiv Oblast. The flames affected more than 5,000 hectares of the park’s territory. As a result of the fires on the territory of the peninsula, up to 4 million trees were damaged. This is evidenced by the monitoring carried out by employees of the “Biloberezhya Svyatoslav” National Park based on data from Sentinel-2 satellites, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine reports. “Most of the fires were repeated and affected the same area several times. It will be possible to finally calculate the damage caused by the fires only after the territory is de-occupied,” the department says. We will remind you that the Kinburn Peninsula, the “pearl” of the Ukrainian environment, is located within the borders of the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, and is currently under enemy occupation. On the peninsula there are two areas of the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve, the national nature park “Biloberezhya Svyatoslav”, the regional landscape park “Kinburnska Kosa”, and the wetlands “Yagorlytska Zatoka”. Earlier, the Ministry of Environment announced the amount of damage caused to the environment by the Russians during the invasion.
