The largest bison herd in Ukraine lives in Lviv region.  VIDEO

The largest bison population in Ukraine was recorded in the Lviv region – 114 individuals.

The animals live on the grounds of the Brodiv Forest Fund “Carpathian Forest Office”, the state enterprise “Forests of Ukraine” reported. The conditions of bison settlement, taking into account the fodder base and protective properties of hunting grounds, are close to their range.

Most of the animals belong to the Bialowieza subspecies – it is the largest in terms of linear and weight indicators among the entire Bison genus, foresters note.

The size of the herd depends on the conditions and needs of the animals. This is also influenced by the quality care of specialists, security, provision of watering holes, feeding of animals. Natural factors also influence aging of bison and their natural mortality“, the post says.

Although bison obtain food on their own, during the entire winter period forestry workers additionally feed them.

12 individuals of wild bison were brought to Lviv region from Lithuania in the 1980s. In 2007, in order to preserve the only bison population of the Bialovezh line in Ukraine, 12 more Caucasian bison individuals were brought to the company’s premises.

Currently, two local reproductive subpopulations of bison live in the region – the Bialyovezian and Bialyovezian-Caucasian lineages. According to the recent calculations of foresters, there are 114 individuals in total. This is the largest bison subpopulation in Ukraine.

In general, about half a thousand bison live on the territory of our state.
