The majority of surveyed Ukrainians (61%) participated in volunteer assistance to the Defense Forces of Ukraine or their fellow citizens. About 10% – helped with physical work, 31% – financially, and almost 20% – with both money and work. This is evidenced by the survey results of the Ilko Kucheriv Foundation “Democratic Initiatives”. About 15% of Ukrainians reported that they did not help the army or the displaced, but were going to do so. At the same time, almost 18% of respondents did not participate in such assistance and do not plan to. There are slightly more people who have not joined volunteer assistance and do not plan to – in the southern (25%) and eastern (30%) macro-regions. However, this does not fully explain regional differences, sociologists say, because the survey did not show significant differences in self-assessment of the material condition between residents of different macro-regions. “Significantly less involvement in volunteering and the desire to help one’s army and fellow citizens is observed among people whose views were influenced by Russian propaganda,” say sociologists. For example, among those who agree with the Russian interpretation of the Revolution of Dignity as a “coup d’état”, there are more who do not want to help the Defense Forces of Ukraine or the displaced. Instead, volunteers are much more numerous among people who consider the Revolution of Dignity to be a just uprising against an authoritarian regime. Sociologists remind that, in general, about 12% still support the propaganda message about the “coup d’état” in Ukraine. At the same time, among the residents of the south and east of Ukraine, about 23% agree with this, but even there they do not constitute a majority. The survey was conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Foundation “Democratic Initiatives” together with the sociological service of the Razumkov Center with the support of the MATRA program from December 13 to 21, 2022. 2018 respondents over the age of 18 took part in it. The theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.3%. At the same time, additional systematic deviations of the sample may be caused by the consequences of Russian aggression, in particular, the forced evacuation of millions of citizens.
