The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy published the statement of the Commissioner of the Ukrainian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale Taras Shevchenko. In particular, he noted that the Ministry is open to dialogue and is ready for constructive cooperation with the curatorial group.

The message states that “The Ministry carries out regular and operational communication with curators“.

In particular, Shevchenko wrote that in addition to the meeting with the curators, the ICIP also provided informational support to the team and communicated with representatives of the biennale. The Ministry’s team also provided advice on attracting additional funds – provided a letter of support for participation in the competition for mobility grants House of Europe.

MKIP concluded an agreement with the office of the Venice Biennale to provide premises for the Ukrainian art project free of charge and provided the curators with rules for using the pavilion. According to Shevchenko, this made it possible to save 4 million UAH of budget funds.

Budget funds for participation in the biennial should be allocated from the State Budget for 2024, but only after the ICIP approves the work plan for that year.

The Ministry provides only partial financial support for the creation and implementation of a national cultural project at the expense of budget funds provided for this by the Ministry of Education and Culture. At the same time, the winners always attract additional funds for the implementation of the project“, Taras Shevchenko wrote in a statement.

However, in the comment for UP. Culture curator of the Ukrainian pavilion Victoria Bavykina stressed that the ICIP does not support any communication with them.

The curators of the Pavilion did not receive recommendations for additional funding – all grants were found independently, including a competition from the House of Europe. At that time, only a letter confirming the participation of artists and team members in the implementation of the Pavilion was requested from MKIP.

Currently, we do not have any communication with the Ministry. On October 24, we sent another letter to the Ministry with a question about what kind of budget the Ministry planned for the implementation of the biennial. To which we received the answer that “there is a war in the country.” Before that, we sent 2 letters and official requests with a similar question, which remained unanswered“, Bavykina said.

Earlier, the curators of the Ukrainian Pavilion of the Venice Biennale, Maksym Horbatskyi and Victoria Bavykina, published an official statement that the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy does not provide support to the project from the department.

In June 2023, the expert commission headed by the Ministry of Culture selected the curatorial project “Weaving Nets” by Victoria Bavykina and Maksym Horbatsky for presentation in Venice.
