The restoration of the leaning medieval tower of Garisenda will cost the country 20 million euros, and the restoration work will last at least 10 years, said the mayor of the Italian city of Bologna, Matteo Lepore.
He stated this during a briefing at the City Hall, writes The Guardian.
“I think we will spend at least 20 million euros to restore the tower, maybe more. The Leaning Tower of Pisa took 10 years to design and restore. Nothing indicates that things will be faster here“, said Matteo Lepore.
The tower has already been closed to visitors due to fears of the authorities that it may collapse.

The Asinelli tower, which is built next to Garisenda, is about twice as tall and also leans, but it is currently open to tourists.
The Garisenda site was closed for the first time in October after special sensors detected changes in the tower’s tilt. Garisenda leans at an angle of 4 degrees, compared to 3.9 degrees for the more famous Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.
The authorities have already started building a 5-meter barrier around Garisenda in case of a possible collapse. Metal nets will be installed around the tower. The strengthening project is worth around €5m (£4.3m).
Italy’s civil protection agency has declared a “yellow” alert level for the area around Garisenda. This means that she “is under surveillance, but does not pose an immediate risk to the safety of people.”
