The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Science of Ukraine said that it envisages the unification of higher education institutions

Over the past 15 years, the number of students in Ukraine has almost halved, so the network of higher education institutions is planned to be reduced by merging.

Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi said what the modernization of the network of higher education institutions entails and what are its advantages.

According to him, in 2009 there were 350 institutions of higher education in Ukraine, where an average of 6,700 students received their education.

Currently, the number of higher education institutions has decreased to 300, and the average number of students is approximately 400 people, the minister says.

“The number of entrants decreases every year and, unfortunately, this trend will continue. The main reason is depopulation. War also plays a role.”– says Oksen Lisovyi.

According to him, as a result of the merger, the educational institutions joining other universities will have the following advantages:

  • greater opportunities for the development of scientific and educational potential;
  • access to investments of the World Bank program in educational and scientific and laboratory equipment for the targeted needs of the institute or faculty;
  • an opportunity to concentrate resources on training competitive specialists for a specific industry.

“Institutions that join larger higher education institutions retain a certain degree of autonomy, transforming into separate institutes or faculties. Scientific schools get additional opportunities for development without “dissolving” in the university to which they join.” – reported Oksen Lisovyi.

He added that the reorganization of educational institutions will not affect the education of students. Changes will apply only to future entrants.

Earlier, the Minister of Education and Science explained what the transformation of higher education would be like.
