The National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, which recently found itself at the center of discussions due to the replacement of the Soviet coat of arms on the Motherland sculpture, will soon receive a new name. The museum will be renamed the National Museum of the War of Independence. General director of the museum Yuriy Savchuk said this in an interview with Ukrainian Radio. “We are fighting for our museum to become a place of memory in the modern Russian-Ukrainian war, a museum about the heroism of the Ukrainian people, as well as a place of memory commemorating our victory – and not only for Ukraine, but for the entire free democratic world,” – emphasized Savchuk. He emphasized that the museum speaks not only about the Second World War, but also about the war for independence during the 20th-21st centuries, from the declaration of the first independence in 1918 by the Fourth Universal until the present day. How quickly the renaming will happen will depend on several factors. Currently, the information has been sent to the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy. Subsequently, there should be a procedure for approval of the offer. “And we sent relevant requests with information to the leading institutions in the field of memory policy – the Institute of National Memory and the Institute of the History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences. That is, there is an initiative and a name created in the museum, caused by the museum experience, a new understanding of the museum’s mission.” , – said Yurii Savchuk. Until 2015, “National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War. Memorial Complex” was called “Memorial Complex “National Museum of the History of the Great Patriotic War”. It was renamed in accordance with the order of the then Minister of Culture Vyacheslav Kyrylenka dated July 16. The decision to rename the museum was made on the basis of laws on decommunization.
