In Yaroslavl, the performance of the play “Einstein and Margarita” with the participation of Alexei Serebryakov and Ksenia Rappoport was canceled. The Ministry of Culture of the Yaroslavl region explained that this was done “taking into account public opinion”. The reason was the anti-war stance of the artists. Earlier, the performance had already been canceled in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk.
As 76.ru writes, the city authorities received a number of appeals from proactive citizens who demanded the cancellation of the performance. One of them, local activist Sergey Kazansky, sent a letter demanding the cancellation of the performance to the governor of the Yaroslavl region, to the regional duma, to the Ministry of Culture and other authorities. The participation in the performance of Serebryakov and Rappoport did not suit the ego.
“These artists live abroad, oppose a special military operation, and earn money in Russia,” Kazantsev argued his demand.
- The play “Einstein and Margarita” was directed by Alexander Maryn based on the play by playwright Alexander Gelman. It tells about the love story of the physicist Albert Einstein and Margarita, the wife of the Russian emigrant Sergei Konyonkov. The premiere of the play took place on June 12, 2022 at the Pushkin Moscow Drama Theater.
- In February 2022, actress Ksenia Rappoport condemned Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine. She also spoke out against political repression in the cultural sphere in Russia. In social networks, she supported her colleague Liya Akhedzhakova, whose performances were also canceled due to the actress’s anti-war stance.
- Actor Alexey Serebryakov lived with his family in Canada for several years, and after his return he was severely criticized for uncomplimentary remarks he made against Russia in the media.
