The first laboratory-confirmed case of a new subspecies of the Omicron COVID strain called “Pirola” was discovered in the Rivne region on November 7. A 20-year-old man fell ill with it.
It was possible to recognize the case of “Pirola” thanks to sequencing – a laboratory study that allows you to genetically decode the virus and find out what mutations have occurred in its genome.
According to the minister, the case discovered in the Rivne region shows that the surveillance system in Ukraine works effectively: “We’re discovering new strains, we’re sequencing, we’re discovering new ones mutations“.
