A South Korean court has sentenced a 68-year-old man to 14 months in prison for praising North Korea in a poem.

This is reported by the BBC with reference to the South Korean media.

In 2016, Lee Yoon-seop advocated the unification of the two countries into a single entity.

According to the author, a socialist system should unite people and provide them with free housing, health care and education.

He also claimed that the number of suicides and people living in debt will decrease.

Lee Yoon-seop was one of the winners of a poetry competition in the North in November 2016.

However, he was convicted in South Korea under a national security law that prohibits public praise of North Korea.

In its ruling on Monday, a Seoul court said he “continued to generate and disseminate a significant amount of propaganda that glorified and praised the North,” the Korea Herald reported.

Lee was previously jailed for 10 months for a similar crime. In 2013, he posted comments online praising the North Korean military, and in subsequent years posted anti-state content on South Korean blogs and websites.
