The president of Harvard University was accused of plagiarism

In the American state of Massachusetts, the president of Harvard University, Claudine Gay, was accused by students of plagiarizing a scientific paper.

The malformed citation was found in Gay’s 1997 doctoral dissertation, The New York Times reported.

The president is accused of using materials from other sources without proper attribution of authorship in her dissertation. Citations from at least 5 articles by the scientist were also found in the work.

According to the institution, violations are present both in short fragments of technical definitions and in copied paragraphs, which Gay only slightly paraphrased.

In some cases, Claudine Gay did not cite other scholars, Harvard said.

One example of the violations is the copied acknowledgments for the dissertation, which she allegedly took from scholar Jennifer Hochschild’s 1996 acknowledgments book.

Hochschild wrote of a mentor who “showed me the importance of using data correctly and following it without fear or favor” and “pushed me much harder than I sometimes wanted to be pushed.”

In her thesis statement, Gay thanked her family for “supporting me more than I sometimes wanted to be supported” and adding words of thanks to her supervisor, Gary King, who reminded her “of the importance of getting the data right and following them without fear or affection”.

According to Harvard, the investigation related to Gale’s research is being conducted by an independent three-member review board composed of scientists “not associated with Harvard” and who are “among the most respected political scientists in the country, whose disciplinary experience allows them to conduct this review of Gaia’s work.”

The institution refused to reveal the names of these scientists.

“The President should update her dissertation by correcting both instances of misquotation,” – the university informed the day before.

Political scientist Carol Swain, a longtime professor at Vanderbilt University who retired in 2017, said she was “outraged” by Harvard’s defense of its president.

“I am also concerned that Harvard University has decided that it can redefine plagiarism when it suits its needs. That is unacceptable to me.”she said.

Earlier on October 7, the president was accused of anti-Semitism after she spoke about an attack on Israel by the terrorist group Hamas.

After that, the president was accused of plagiarism in a scientific work – on December 10, the local publication of the university published an article “Is Claudine Gay a plagiarist?” activist Christopher Rufo.

It is noted that the text, which highlights the problems with Claudine Gay’s dissertation, appeared the night before a meeting of the board of directors, at which they were to decide whether she would remain in her position.

After the board announced on Dec. 12 that it would support Claudine Gay in her position, allegations of plagiarism began to circulate on social media and in The Washington Free Beacon in particular.

We will remind, earlier the Minister of Education of Ukraine Oksen Lisovoy was accused of plagiarism.

After that, Oksen Lisovyi submitted his thesis for review and promised to give up his degree if plagiarism was found.

Without waiting for the conclusions of the inspection, the minister refused the scientific degree, and the examination of the dissertation was suspended.
