Ukrainian polar explorers of the “Akademik Vernadskyi” station showed how the largest animals on the planet – whales – “jump”. The video of the moment was published by the National Antarctic Science Center. Polar explorer and video author Serhii Glotov managed to film the humpback whale. Adult representatives of this species reach 15 meters in length, which is roughly the size of a 5-story building, according to polar explorers. Scientists have several hypotheses why whales do this. It is assumed that this is probably how the whale tries to “scratch” against the water in order to get rid of the parasites that live and irritate its skin. In addition, through “jumps” these animals communicate with each other, because the sound of a jump can be heard far away, so it can serve as a signal, scientists say. Also, “jumping” can be part of “love games” – courting a female or scaring off competitors. It is in the warm waters where whales live in winter that they reproduce. “But these are only hypotheses, because we still know very little about these largest animals on the planet, which were almost exterminated by man during whaling,” the polar explorers emphasize.
