Writer and memoirist Ludmila Shtern has died

The writer Lyudmila Stern died in the American state of Florida. According to one data, she was 86 years old, according to another – 88 years old.
She was born in the family of Leningrad lawyer Yakov Davydovych and actress and writer Nadezhda Friedlyand (pseudonym: Nadezhda Kramova). The family was close to the literary, scientific and artistic world, was friends with Roman Jacobson, Mikhail Zoshchenko, Boris Eichenbaum, Nikolay Akimov, Viktor Shklovsky, and in later years – with Joseph Brodsky, persecuted writers and artists.
A geologist by education, Lyudmila Shtern participated in the human rights movement, signed letters in defense of Sinyavskyi and Daniel, Academician Sakharov. In 1976, she emigrated and since then lived in America – in New York, Boston and Florida. Her social circle included well-known patrons of the Lieberman couple, translator Gennady Shmakov, Iosif Brodsky, Sergei Dovlatov, about whom she left books of memoirs. Brodsky dedicated poems to her mother, Nadezhda Friedlyand-Kramova.
In addition to memoirs, Lyudmila Stern published several books of prose in the United States – “Po mestu zhitelstva”, “Pod znakom chetery”, “Okhota k peremene mest”. She was engaged in translations, wrote about literature, was published in the periodical Russian Abroad.
Lyudmila Stern’s funeral will be held on June 13 in Miami Beach.
The writer was a frequent guest of Radio Liberty programs. In 2007, Ivan Tolstoy recorded a conversation with her called “The Time of Lyudmila Stern”.
