The son of a captured soldier dreamed of a telephone so that his father would call him. And he waited for the call

As a result of the largest exchange of prisoners, the father of 7-year-old Roman returned home. For more than a year, the boy did not let go of the phone, which was given to him by volunteers, because he was waiting for a call from his father. And on January 3, he called.
This poignant story was told in the Ukrainian foundation “MRIA”.
In a comment for “UP. Life”, the head of the foundation, Tetyana Komlyk, noted that in November 2022, volunteers launched a project whose goal was to fulfill the dreams of the children of captured Ukrainian defenders.
They all wanted different things, but they also had a common desire – the return of dad:
- “I want a watch like dad’s and for him to return from captivity”
- “I want a soccer ball and for dad to see me score a goal”
- “I want a Dream. A plane. So that we can collect it together with dad”
- “I want a dollhouse, and for dad to be at home”
- “I want a gymnastic ball and for dad to come to the competition”
Among the children was Roman, the son of a defender of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, who was captured on the first day of the full-scale invasion.

“I want a phone to be called by my father from captivity” – the boy wished then.
On St. Nicholas Day 2022, volunteers made part of children’s dreams come true.
“When Roma was given a phone, he ran home as quickly as possible to put a SIM card in it and turn it on – because suddenly dad will call.
The child never let this phone out of his hands. Even when the teachers at school asked to hand in the phones, he kept it close to him and the teacher never insisted. Everyone knew that Roma was waiting for a call from dad every second.” – said Tatyana.
Roman’s mother Viktoriya said in a comment for “UP. Life” that at the end of 2022, the children of prisoners of war, missing persons and fallen defenders of Ukraine visited Istanbul. They were given a tour of the “Baykar” factory, where the well-known attack drones are manufactured.
The enterprise has a strict access system, so everyone was asked to hand in their phones.
“Roma could not understand that we were only leaving them in the hiding cell for a certain time. The son thought that the phone would be taken away forever. So when Haluk Bayraktar (director of Baykar – ed.) came out and asked the children if they liked it at the factory. My the child cried and said no.
The director was scared: he thought someone had insulted or pushed Roma. But I explained through the translator that my son was crying because his phone was taken away.
Halyuk Bayraktar asks: “Why do you need a phone? Here’s a better look: this is the world’s first drone with a Ukrainian heart.” And Roma answers: “My phone was taken away, and dad should call him.” This moved the director very much and he ordered the chief of security to give the gadget back.” – says the woman.
On January 3, little Roman’s dream came true – his father, who returned to Ukraine as part of the exchange of prisoners, called the gifted phone.
“When the son heard his father’s voice, he began to cry. The man asked why he was crying. Romchyk answered that he was happy. And when the son realized that his father was already in Ukraine, he cried even more.” – shares Victoria.
Volunteer Tetyana Komlyk says that when it became known about the exchange, she sobbed together with the wife of the released defender, the boy’s mother.
“But they were tears of joy. There are still more than a hundred of her husband’s siblings from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in captivity, so Vika remains with us – we will continue to fight for their return and help the families of the prisoners.” – emphasizes Tatiana Komlyk.
