Dozens of schools in Mykolaiv were destroyed as a result of shelling by the Russian invaders. One of the surviving institutions is the Mykolaiv Lyceum No. 55.

In it, they will be able to organize full face-to-face education for 3,000 children, when they build a reliable shelter that would meet the requirements of the State Emergency Service.

One of the students who want to return to school is 9-year-old Andriy, who moved to Mykolaiv a year ago.

The boy was born and lived in Kherson. Now he is studying in the 4th grade, but three years of study were done remotely.

In Kherson, the school did not work full-time because of the occupation, and in Mykolaiv, the problem is constant Russian shelling.

“We came to Mykolaiv because I had a job here. We left in the summer and have been living here for a year. At school, Andriy studied remotely while there was Internet, because everyone left, and I have such a profession that it was not worth showing, where we live

Everyone left, and we alone stayed with him. Tried to leave three times, came under fire, returned”– says the boy’s mother, Svitlana.

Andrii and his mother stayed in the occupation for about six months. During one of the evacuation attempts, the family reached the temporarily occupied Vasylivka of the Zaporizhzhia region – through this settlement it was possible to enter the territory controlled by Ukraine.

“We spent the night there, because they didn’t let us in. We came under fire, spent the night in a field. In the morning, I decided to return and sit some more.” – recalls my mother.

Andriy and his mother lived in Kherson for another 2 weeks. Eventually, they found the car and left the occupation on the fourth attempt.

The family settled in Mykolaiv, Andriy went to study at the 55 lyceum, he really loved his class teacher. However, it was not possible to hide from the rockets here either.

“There was almost nothing in Mykolaiv for a long time, and then it happened that they were shelling every night for two weeks in a row. I no longer knew where it was safer.

But Andriy is very used to Mykolaiv, he has his own life here. We really liked the school and the teacher’s approach. In Kherson, unfortunately, there was a not very good teacher, she did not pay attention to the children at all.”– recalls Svitlana.

Andria’s class teacher at the lyceum is also from the Kherson region. The boy’s mother says that she is a teacher by vocation, because she knows how to get along with children, pays attention, communicates with each student despite the remote format.

Also, Andriy has already made friends in a new city, but he saw classmates only on Zoom.

“He has the ability to do mathematics, the Ukrainian language is given to him without any problems, but since the children have relaxed and he does not feel such control, there is no responsibility in education. I work a lot, he studies on his own. Children need society, not sitting at home online. They need to communicate, run during breaks.

It was the coronavirus, now it’s a war. The children are so scared. They need to see the teacher and classmates live. Therefore, we would be happy to return to school. Good shelters are needed in all cities, and especially in Mykolaiv, because it is simply dangerous for children.” – says Svitlana.

Andriy likes mathematics and the Ukrainian language the most. Besides school, he is fond of sports.

The boy practiced boxing in his native city and will soon resume classes in Mykolaiv.

In the future, Andrii dreams of becoming a policeman. But in order to make dreams come true, a schoolboy needs quality education and security.

We would like to remind you that in order to help 3,000 Mykolaiv children resume full-time education, you can support the fundraising for the shelter of Lyceum No. 55, which was organized by Ukranian Pravda together with the savED foundation.
