The Taliban arrest Afghan women for not wearing the hijab

In Afghanistan, women are arrested for disobeying the Taliban’s decree on wearing the hijab. Many of them are now afraid to appear in public places.

About this during the United Nations briefing stated Roza Otunbayeva, special representative of the UN Secretary General in Afghanistan.

“Denying women and girls access to education and work, as well as excluding them from many aspects of public life, has caused enormous damage to mental and physical health“, – said Otunbayeva.

She also said that women are subject to repression, violence, including corporal punishment, and even the death penalty. The special representative emphasized that women do not have a voice in decision-making, their rights are not recognized and their “throw away“ from society.

Roza Otunbayeva called on the Taliban to cancel the imposed restrictions, because the damage from them will only increase over time.

We will remind, after coming to power, the Taliban significantly limited the rights of women. They used to banned them to study at universities and introduced a ban for the showing of films starring women, and female TV journalists and presenters had to wear hijab.

In addition, the Taliban banned Afghan women to work in UN institutions. As noted at the time, almost 400 women workers were part of the organization. The spokesman of the Secretary General emphasized that they are important for ensuring the continuation of UN missions in Afghanistan.
