The Verkhovna Rada wants to make May 8 a day off, and March 8 a day for the protection of women’s rights

A group of people’s deputies proposes to make May 8 a day off instead of May 9, and call March 8 the International Day for the Protection of Women’s Rights. The corresponding bill was registered in the Verkhovna Rada on February 28. The bill proposes to amend Article 73 of the Labor Code of Ukraine regarding the holidays of March 8 and May 9. The holiday of March 8 is celebrated annually in the world as the day of struggle for women’s rights. Since 1975, the United Nations has celebrated this day as International Women’s Day, and since 1975 – also as the International Day of Struggle for Women’s Rights and International Peace. Photo: AllaSerebrina/Depositphotos “In Ukraine, on the one hand, March 8 is marked by women’s marches and events dedicated to women’s rights and equality, but on the other hand, according to an outdated Soviet tradition, a certain part of society perceives this day as a “holiday of spring and beauty.” In our opinion, such a perception is stereotypical and nullifies the social and political nature of this holiday,” says the explanatory note to the draft law. Instead of Victory Day over Nazism in the Second World War on May 9, people’s deputies propose to make May 8 the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation a holiday. At the same time, traditional events on May 9, according to the draft law, will take place on a working day. More than a dozen people’s deputies acted as co-authors of the draft law.
