The exhibition “The Devil’s Dozen” by the co-curator of the gallery opened in the Kyiv gallery “White World” Oleksandr Yanovych. Created more than 30 pictorial abstract works from 2021 to 2023. They became a kind of therapy and expression. In parallel with the preparation of the first author’s exhibition, Oleksandr Yanovych held the International Triennial of Patriotic Drawing, which ended with the vernissage.

Now in the gallery you can buy a catalog of artists’ works and stickers with copies of the works of the triennial – all proceeds from the sale will be transferred to the support of the Armed Forces.

Correspondent UP. Life Anna Shokan spoke with Oleksandr Yanovych about holding the triennial in a full-scale war, what works the artists presented, how the winner was chosen and about the help of the Armed Forces.

For the first time, the “White World” art center held an international drawing triennial, which was dedicated to reflections on the war in Ukraine. Applications of artists from different countries have been collected since August 2022.

The idea of the competition arose a long time ago, and it was precisely the war that initially stopped its implementation. When the war covered us all, and we all lived in the space of this tragedy, for a while we all had the thought that we were doing what we could – it was important and a lot, but we could do more. I wanted to do more, because the main idea of our enemy is to change our life, actually stop it. Somewhere closer to Independence Day, the thought came that this day marks exactly six months of the war. Then I decided that on the Independence Day of the past year, we would make an open call“, said the initiator of the contest, gallerist Oleksandr Yanovych.

More than 200 applications from Ukrainian and foreign artists were collected for the project. All related to the reflections of the war, reinterpretation of the traumatic experience. 161 works were selected for participation in the competition.

Ukrainian artists were very pleased that some location has resumed work and wants to show how artists reflect on the war. It turned out to be a very emotional project. There were relatively few foreign works, because the artists simply could not send them – there was a separate difficulty with logistics. Several works were sent to us 3 times – our employee forwarded them from Warsaw“, says Yanovych.

The winners were chosen on the anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the aggressor country Russia.

The opening was held exactly six months later – on the anniversary of the war – as a symbol of the fact that life goes on and we do not just resist, but everything we do is for the sake of victory. And artists who can, fight, do some volunteering, help everyone in whatever way they can – we continue to work and live“, says the gallerist.

He received the first place and the main prize Vladyslav Yerko – a professional Ukrainian artist, known as an illustrator of books, in particular the works of Shakespeare. Has different series of graphic works. He submitted a work about the defenders of Mariupol to the competition.

There is the inscription EDRPOU and a number – and this is the number of the “Azovstal” plant. Such a powerful combination of emotion, thought and professionalism of the artist, despite the popularity of the images, does not look like a conjuncture. What is there specifically about Mariupol is secondary. First of all, it was important to what extent the artist was able to convey his inner state – and he needed exactly that. This is a real reflection on the war. The work is professional, bright, raised a painful topic. Each of the viewers sees his own in her. It is a mixture of horror and hope“, Yanovych commented.

The three winners received $1,000, $750 and $500, as well as special medals. The gallery produced more awards to donate to the Armed Forces.

In addition to the fact that the competition showed the community and artists that life goes on, we came up with a few more things that will directly help the Armed Forces of Ukraine – we printed a catalog, all proceeds from which we send to the needs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. We offer gold-plated medals to donors for 25,000 hryvnias. Several benefactors have already awarded them during the opening ceremony“, Yanovych said.

The White World Contemporary Art Center holds exhibitions and educational events in the gallery, works as a publishing house and organizes the Triennale drawing competitions. It was one of the first Kyiv locations to work during a full-scale war.
