The 2023 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to scientists Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausch and Anne L’Huillier, the Nobel Foundation reports.

They were awarded “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light to study the dynamics of electrons in matter.”

Pierre Agostini (Ohio University, USA), Ferenc Krausch (Max Planck Institute for Physics, Germany) and Anna L’Huillier (Lund University, Sweden) have shown a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure fast processes under time in which electrons move or change energy.

“There are potential applications in many different fields. In electronics, for example, it is important to understand and control the behavior of electrons in matter. Attosecond pulses can also be used to identify different molecules, for example in medical diagnostics.” – informs the Fund.
