The Russian theater “Sovremennyk” confirmed the dismissal of actress Lia Akhedzhakova. This was reported by the Russian news agencies RIA Novosti, TASS and Interfax.

The theater said that Akhedzhakova resigned of her own free will and will no longer serve as of April 5.

The artist told about her departure from “Sovremennyk” back in March. Then the management of the theater decided to remove from the repertoire the play “The Genie Game”, in which Akhedzhakova played one of the main roles. According to the actress, the director of the theater Yuriy Kravets explained that the production was removed due to letters from viewers who condemned Akhedzhakova’s anti-war stance.

“Sovremennyk” did not comment on the dismissal of the actress at the time and called Akhedzhakova’s poor health as the reason for the cancellation of the performance. The actress did not confirm this, saying that she “really wanted to play”.

Akhedzhakova reported that after leaving the theater, where she had served since 1977, she would continue to engage in touring activities and stay in Russia.

After a full-scale military invasion of the territory of Ukraine, the Russian authorities began to persecute, including cultural figures, who opposed the war. Hundreds of directors, actors, musicians and artists faced the impossibility of engaging in professional activities in Russia and were forced to leave the country.
