Kyiv customs officials discovered an attempt to illegally send valuable fossils from Ukraine abroad by mail. Some remains of ancient creatures are about 400 million years old.
Paleontological experts determined that these fossils are unique and have cultural and scientific value as geological heritage, the State Customs Service of Ukraine said in a statement.
During the customs inspection of an international postal shipment from Ternopil to Taiwan, employees noticed fossils with bizarre outlines. Customs officers assumed that such a find could be ancient.
The fossils were immediately sent to the National Natural Science Museum of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for examination.
According to experts, these fossils are slabs of red sandstone of the Early Devonian (geological period of the Paleozoic era) with the shells of two species of “fish” Propopteraspis, as well as weakly cemented limestone with a whole crab Daira speciose and the shell of a red mollusk Halyotis sp.

The museum established that the finds are original fossils from the Dniester River Basin in Podil. The geological age of three of them is about 400 million years, the remains of a crab and a mollusk are 10-20 million years old.
The Kyiv customs office drew up a report on violation of customs rules under Art. 473 of the Customs Code of Ukraine regarding a citizen who tried to send exclusive paleontological samples abroad. They were removed.
It will be recalled that fossils of a pregnant frog more than 100 million years old were recently found in China.
