13-year-old Darya Slyusarenko is a student of the 8th grade of Mykolaiv Lyceum No. 55. The girl finished the 7th grade with several “nines” in her report card, but says that “it’s not critical.” Daria was last at school on February 23, 2022. Thanks to the readers of “UP”, Daria has the opportunity to return to school. “During COVID-19, if someone was sick, the whole class was sent to quarantine for 2-3 weeks. There was a moment when half of the school got sick and we all studied online. In February, we went out and went to school for 23 days,” said the girl in the comment “UP. Life”. Darya Slyusarenko. The online lesson lasted 25 minutes, then the teacher turned on the presentation, during which the students wrote notes. “There were difficult topics, for example, linear equations from algebra. The teacher’s 25 minutes was not enough, and if you have a question, you should either finish it or find the answer yourself, or write/call the teacher after class,” says the girl. During physical education classes, students performed exercises via video communication. In particular, this is how the standards for push-ups and squats were compiled. “We made paper balls and threw them against the wall at home in front of the camera in order to know how, for example, to throw a ball in volleyball,” says Darya. In the 8th grade, the girl dreams of returning to school. The Lyceum, where Daria studies, does not have a bomb shelter, so it is dangerous to be in the institution. “Even if I go outside the city, where air alarms are less frequent than in Mykolaiv, the teacher who is in the city stops the lesson when the alarm starts. I want to go to school because I miss the atmosphere, I don’t have enough of it. I can study at home, but it’s difficult for me. For me, home is a place to rest, not to study,” the girl sums up. “For me, a home is for rest, not for study,” says Daria. Also read: There is nowhere to hide from rockets.
