Clergymen of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine opposed the establishment of the “registered partnership” institute, which is provided for in draft law No. 9103 submitted to the parliament. This is reported by the OCU. The corresponding document provides for the registration of “same-sex partnerships”. Within the framework of the document, in case of its adoption, it is planned to introduce the institute of registered civil partnership only for same-sex couples. However, the Holy Synod adopted a statement calling “registered partnership” something that “contradicts the natural law established by God, violates the norms of the Constitution of Ukraine regarding the definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman.” Photo: ArturVerkhovetskiy/Depositphotos According to clergymen, the draft law “poses a threat to public morality”, in particular to “the physical and moral health of children and their right to be brought up in a family created on the basis of the marriage of a man and a woman.” The OCU also believes that the adoption of the draft law as a result may worsen the demographic situation in Ukraine. “The Synod instructed His Beatitude Metropolitan Epiphanius of Kyiv and All Ukraine to send relevant letters to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the President of Ukraine and the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine,” added the OCU. It will be recalled that People’s Deputy Inna Sovsun submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law on civil partnerships for the registration of same-sex marriages. According to the draft law, civil (registered) partnership can be used by both military and civilian, same-sex or different-sex couples. The bill could also help same-sex couples define mutual rights and responsibilities; issues of property ownership, inheritance, social security, rights in case of death, disappearance of a partner.
