Three films shot by Ukrainian filmmakers in co-production with other countries were shortlisted for the European Film Academy Award in the “Best Documentary” category. The events take place before a full-scale invasion, in 2019, and living near the contact line and dreaming of changing their lives, the heroes receive an unexpected offer to go to the Himalayas. The director says that her film is about the new generation of Donbas, ready to implement changes in their native land, which was prevented by the invasion on February 24. The premiere of Alisa Kovalenko’s film took place in one of the competition programs of the 73rd Berlin Film Festival. And the other day she received the award as the Best director of this year’s Odessa Film Festival, and “We will not fade” – as the Best documentary film in the field of human rights protection. The testimony tape “From where to where”, which became the Best Ukrainian full-length documentary film at OMCF 2023, was shot by Polish director Macek Hamela. From the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, he became a volunteer, got behind the wheel and first picked up Ukrainians from the border, and later in his own car began to take people out of Ukrainian territories that were in the war zone. With his documentary, he tells the stories of the people he met when they were forced to flee the war. The film “Motherland”, co-produced by Sweden, Ukraine and Norway, tells the story of the 2020 protests in Belarus and explores the culture of violence and abuse in the Belarusian army that is creating a traumatized generation. The main character is Svitlana, her son Nikita was found hanged in a military unit two years ago. “Fatherland” was shown at the Odessa Film Festival, which ended last week in Chernivtsi. One of the directors – Alexander Mikhalkovich – debuted in a full-length documentary film in 2019 with the film about the annexed Crimea “My Grandmother from Mars”.
