Ukrainian artist Ihor Yanovych died

A contemporary artist and member of the Union of Artists died at the age of 79 Ihor Yanovych.
This was announced on December 28 on the website of the art center Ya Gallery Lviv.

“A huge loss for us, for all Ukrainian and world art. A classic of Ukrainian modern art, he belonged to the neo-avant-garde and representatives of abstract art. Yanovych’s exhibitions were held not only in Ukraine, but also in museums and galleries abroad: Poland, Germany, Lithuania, Greece and other countries. His art had a strong influence on many generations of artists. For the past twenty years, Ihor Yanovych has worked fruitfully, creating his own projects and cooperating with Ya Gallery“, the team of the institution wrote.

“His workshop was a place of strength. Every meeting is an incredible communication and necessarily something new from his art. A week ago, we talked about new projects for 2024. Ihor, I promise that everything will happen. Many people were filled and inspired by you. We will learn to live with your art without you“, added the art manager and founder of the modern art gallery “Ya Gallery” Pavlo Gudimov.
Ihor Yanovych worked with different styles, in particular with monumentalism, abstractionism and non-figurativeism. The artist himself spoke about his art as follows:
“In general, I am concerned about the form of construction and the form of destruction, and on this border – the emergence of new forms, substances of a new state“.
He was born in the summer of 1944 in Kyiv, but spent most of his life in Lviv. There he graduated from the Department of Artistic Ceramics at the Lviv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts.
In 1986, he became a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. The artist was a participant in more than 70 exhibition projects in Ukraine and abroad, organized 25 personal exhibitions.
During the full-scale invasion, Ihor Yanovych felt the war very keenly and reflected the war in his own work. A month before the invasion, the artist’s wife also died, whose loss he deeply grieved.
According to the artist himself in the podcast “The muses are not silent“, he created paintings for “psychotherapy during the war”.
“I have never done illustration in my work and I believe that art should experience. And it takes time to experience and understand. Of course, I’m influenced by the horrors that happen, and I think it soaks into what you’re doing… I’d call it more therapy. It helps and heals [мистецтво, – прим.]“, Ihor Yanovych said.
