Ukrainian artist-monumentalist Oksana Grudzynska has died

A Ukrainian artist of decorative and monumental art passed away at the age of 100 Oksana Grudzynska. Her most recognizable work was the mosaic at the “Khreshchatyk” metro station, created based on the motifs of traditional Ukrainian plant ornament.

The National Museum of Decorative Arts of Ukraine, where more than 100 of her works were exhibited, announced the artist’s death.
“Everyone who visited the Kyiv metro at Khreschatyk station admired these beautiful panels with Ukrainian character and soul. The author is the artist Oksana Arkadiivna Grudzinska, who celebrated her 100th anniversary last year. Oksana Arkadiivna passed away today. Light and good memory…“, the singer wrote Anzhelika Rudnytska.

Oksana Grudzynska was an honored artist of the Ukrainian SSR, also a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. She became the author of many ceramic works: decorative panels, architectural ceramic inserts, wall plates, vases.

“The origins of the logic, beauty, and poetics of Oksana Grudzynska’s artistic style lie in Ukrainian folk art. At the heart of her work is the application of not so much the forms and motifs of folk art as the principles that make up its basis. The artist’s works are as clear, logical, saturated with good light and positive energy as the artist herself“, they said in the museum of decorative arts.
Oksana Grudzynska was born on July 28, 1923 in Moscow, in the family of an architect. She graduated from the Moscow Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts. There, her teachers were the artists Oleksandr Deineka and Robert Falk.

Since 1947, Oksana Grudzynska worked in the experimental workshop of artistic ceramics of the Institute of Architecture of the Academy of Construction and Architecture of the Ukrainian SSR. As noted in the museum, a team of folk craftsmen and artists worked on the restoration of Kyiv destroyed by the war and the creation of a new decorative face of the capital of Ukraine.
Mystkina worked for 20 years at the “Sofiivska Pottery”, in the early 1970s she started working at the Art Fund of Ukraine. During this time, she developed her style of monumental and decorative art.

Grudzynska participated in the design of the facade of the Animal Husbandry pavilion at VDNG in Kyiv, the lobby of the National Museum of Ukrainian Folk Decorative Art, and the Donbas sanatorium in Sloviansk.

The artist created many panels throughout Ukraine: “History of Communication” in the interior of the Communication Building in the city of Derazhnya, Khmelnytskyi Region, mosaic panels for the Mechanical and Metallurgical Technical School in Kyiv, the refining plant in the city of Sumy, the Palace of Culture of the Chemical Association “Azot” in Rivne and others.
In 1990–2010, she taught painting at the ceramics department of the Mykhailo Boychuk Kyiv State Academy of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design.

In August 2023, an anniversary exhibition of the artist was held in Kyiv – “The magic of Oksana Grudzynska’s ceramics. 100 years, 100 works, 100 friends”.
