In Volyn, a 62-year-old man died of listeriosis, a disease transmitted from infected animals.
As reported in the Volyn Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention, a resident of the Rozhyshchensk community fell ill with listeriosis. Specialists are investigating the source of the infection.

What is listeriosis?
Listeriosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that are widely distributed in nature, in soil, sand and water, according to the Volyn Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
The most vulnerable to this disease are children of the first year of life and pregnant women. The risk group also includes people with reduced immunity.
The source of listeria is rodents, farm animals (especially sheep, cows and pigs), domestic and wild animals, as well as wild birds, in particular, pigeons.
Animals release listeria into the external environment with feces, urine, nasal mucus, and milk. Human infection mainly occurs through contact with infected animals and birds or products of their vital activity.
It is also possible to become infected through the use of fish or animal products without heat treatment and contaminated vegetables and fruits, doctors add.
According to the first symptoms, the disease is similar to food poisoning or angina.
In the case of progression, the nervous system suffers.
Doctors warn: to prevent listeriosis, it is important to properly heat food products (boiling, frying, baking) – it 100% destroys listeria. Before eating raw vegetables and fruits, you need to wash them thoroughly. A feature of listeria is the ability to multiply in food products even in the conditions of the refrigerator and freezer.
