Ukrainian feminist Yulia Sporysh received a prestigious German award

Ukrainian feminist, activist of the movement for women’s rights and candidate of sociological sciences Yulia Sporysh won the German Anna Klein Prize for 2024.
This is stated on the page of the Kyiv office of the Heinrich Böll Foundation.
It is noted that Yulia Sporysh was awarded for the fight for women’s rights. In particular, in 2019, she founded the NGO “Girls” in Kyiv to promote sexual education and prevent gender-based violence.
Last year alone, 150,000 people in 120 settlements of the country received help from “Divchat”. The team is 99% female, and during the war its number increased tenfold.

“A particularly strong impression on the jury of the Anna Klein Women’s Award was made by the fact that even in wartime Yulia Sporish and all members of the NGO “Divchata” continue to fight for gender equality, the presence and leading role of women in society and to overcome stereotypes in this area“, says the award’s website.
The jury also noted “Yulia’s firm belief in the better future of the feminist movement in Ukraine and dedication to the ideas of a gender-sensitive approach to the future reconstruction of the country.”
Yulia Sporish regularly participates in national and international conferences and events, such as UN-Women in New York, Women Deliver in Rwanda, where she emphasizes the importance of involving women in the reconstruction of the state.
In Ukraine, Yulia Sporysh is a member of the steering committee of the platform of humanitarian non-governmental organizations.
“This award is a great honor and pride for me, because it once again confirms that we, the NGO “Girls”, do something important and visible every day to support Ukrainian girls and women. Of all the countries in the world, it was the Ukrainian woman who received the award, and this is another chance to draw attention to our war and attract additional resources to overcome its consequences“, the winner wrote on the social network.
It should be noted that the Anna Klein Award is an annual German women’s award that has existed since 2012. It is awarded to women from all over the world who fight for gender equality. Anna Klein is the first female senator in Berlin. She was a feminist, fought for the rights of women and the LGBT community.

Despite the war, Ukraine continues to work on overcoming gender inequality, in particular in pay. As of 2021, the difference was 18% in favor of men.
According to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, it will take another three centuries to achieve gender equality.
