The idea of the initiative arose in April this year as part of the London Book Fair. Then the English PEN, one of the partners of the Ukrainian program at the fair, decided to join the “Unbreakable Libraries” initiative, announcing the collection of books in English at its events. The first meeting of the PEN centers with the management of the Book Aid International charity fund was also held there, during which the idea to bring more books in English to Ukraine appeared. “Before launching the initiative, we conducted a preliminary survey to understand the demand of Ukrainian libraries. 100 libraries from different parts of the country took part in it. It turned out that the biggest request from book collections was for publications in English for children and teenagers: fiction , non-fiction, publications for learning English. Libraries also need classics, biographies, memoirs, reports, essays, publications for self-development and modern prose in English,” says Tetyana Teren. The request was from 10 to 2,000 copies per library. “In the process of working on the project, it was important for us to understand how book libraries will present publications in a foreign language to their audience, so we asked them to report in the survey also about the promotion of these publications,” said Tetyana, clarifying that the libraries plan to organize conversational and youth clubs, cooperate with schools and teachers of foreign languages, create video materials and announce in local media and their own social networks that they have a selection of new books in English. First of all, libraries affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine will receive support. “Although we plan to support the maximum number of requests from libraries from different regions of Ukraine,” says Tetyana Teren. “Unbreakable Libraries” initiative Ukrainian PEN launched the “Unbreakable Libraries” project in June 2022. With the support of foreign partners, Ukrainian publishing houses and caring Ukrainians, PEN collects and delivers new books in Ukrainian and English to libraries in liberated and front-line territories affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine. During this time, libraries in Chernihiv, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, and Donetsk regions received more than 12,000 books. The new international initiative is aimed at supporting book collections in all regions of Ukraine. “In the conditions of a full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, it is not easy to preserve and increase book collections: starting from February 24, 2022, the Russian occupiers destroyed or damaged more than 570 Ukrainian libraries. At the same time, 4.9 million internally displaced persons have been recorded in Ukraine today, which has changed the working conditions of libraries across the country: yes, some partner libraries of the Ukrainian PEN serve many times more people, others record a change in the target audience and, accordingly, need to update their book collections, there are also libraries that have moved from the frontline areas to safer regions and operate today as hubs” , – PEN notes.
