Ukrainian scientist, polar explorer Anton Pugovkin went to the north of the sea Antarctic, to Nelson Island. He became the first polar explorer from Ukraine who arrived on the island. He will explore the little-known island as part of the Ukrainian-Czech research on marine Antarctic vegetation. This is reported in the National Antarctic Science Center. According to the scientist, the island has a rather poor ecosystem – instead of the vast Antarctic tundra, green vegetation is quite rare. “It’s like the same Antarctic, but the Antarctic, which sounds completely different,” said Anton Pugovkin. However, there are colonies of animals on the island that are not found on “Vernadsky” – for example, Antarctic penguins and Antarctic tern. Also, according to the scientist, on the shore of Nelson you can meet a sea elephant – quite rare for “Vernadskyi”. “Unlike our Galindez Island, Nelson has a fairly large northeastern oasis that is free of glaciers. It’s a whole peninsula with a system of freshwater bodies of water and streams, so getting from one end to the other is sometimes not so easy. To get to the other oases, you have to move on the glacier, which occupies most of the island, or use a boat,” Nelson polar explorers describe. On Nelson, Anton Pugovkin had to determine possible points for regular surveillance on the island. And also collect materials for the study of a number of organisms: Antarctic pike, moss, lichens, mushrooms, invertebrates. Research will help to compare the genotypes or properties of these organisms with organisms from other regions, in particular, the “Vernadskyi” station. Earlier, Ukrainian polar explorers showed the “blooming” of snow in Antarctica. Read also: “Weddell’s rides”: polar explorers showed the fun of seals. VIDEO
