Ukrainians complained about paid evacuation flights from Israel: the embassy reacted

Ukraine began evacuating its citizens from Israel through aggravation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, some Ukrainians were outraged by the paid tickets for evacuation flights.

In a commentary for Radio Liberty, Ukrainian Oksana complained that the ticket for the evacuation flight from Israel cost 415 euros, despite the expectation that the tickets would be free.

“There was an announcement on the website of the Consulate of Ukraine in Israel that an evacuation flight will be arranged that Ukrainians can take advantage of. And it will be free of charge, there was such information.

I registered on the link that I wanted to use this flight, and about two days later I was sent a link that said that there would be an evacuation flight, but it would cost 415 euros per person.”the woman complains.

Another Ukrainian, Tetiana, said that she was allegedly unable to evacuate due to the overpriced tickets.

Ambassador of Ukraine to Israel Yevhen Korniychuk commented on the situation to “Hromadskyi”.

In particular, he explained that the message of the embassy did not mention free tickets at alland there are no funds for free evacuation of citizens in the budget.

400-450 euros is the lowest price on the market. At the same time, the embassy was able to negotiate pre-war ticket prices with air carriers.

“We really, for the most vulnerable situations, find an opportunity to finance them. But this is an exception to the rule. We are talking about people who prove to us that they ended up in Israel without means of livelihood, their tickets were canceled, and they do not have the funds to buy new ones.”– added Korniychuk.

Yevhen Korniychuk, in a comment to “UP. Life”, emphasized that the airline, not the embassy, receives the money for the tickets.

Also, tickets for other flights to Europe cost more than the evacuation flights offered to Ukrainians (one thousand euros on average).

“I can say that we have conducted a study, we are monitoring the evacuation. The Americans, Canadians, Germans charge their citizens for the evacuation.

We agreed with the companies for pre-war prices. If someone thinks it’s expensive, we don’t force them (to fly an evacuation flight – ed.) Now there are many more people who are satisfied”the ambassador added.

Note that the evacuation notice, which can now be found on the embassy’s website, does not contain any information about free air tickets.

“Tickets for the first flight to Bucharest are already sold out. If you have already filled out our form and have not received a link to pay for a ticket for the specified flight, it means that there are currently no seats available, as women, children, persons with disabilities are the first to be evacuated, elderly persons, as well as citizens of Ukraine who do not have a physical place of residence and the means to stay in the territory of the State of Israel”. – said in the message dated October 12.

To leave Israel by evacuation plane, you need to fill out form. Ticket prices for different flights may vary, and free evacuation is an exception to the rule.

Ukrainians who find themselves in a special situation and need free evacuation can contact:

  • to the Embassy of Ukraine in Israel on the emergency telephone number: + 972-546-676-782;
  • or to the Ukrainian diplomatic mission in the city of Ramallah by phone: +972-59-823-93-99.

It will be recalled that on October 7, the Palestinian militant group Hamas massively attacked Israel with rockets. On the same day, militants attacked residents of Israel during an electronic music festival in the Negev desert near the border with the Gaza Strip.

On the night of October 9, Israel’s air force continued to strike the Gaza Strip. The IDF said Israel had “severely weakened the capabilities” of Hamas. It was also reported that Israel has regained control of all areas on the border near the Gaza Strip.

As of October 12, the death toll in Israel exceeded 1,300 people, and more than 1,400 people died in the Gaza Strip.

Ukraine has begun evacuating citizens from Israel and the Gaza Strip. The first evacuation flight with 207 citizens of Ukraine took off from Tel Aviv to Bucharest on October 14.

And on October 16, the second evacuation plane took off with 155 Ukrainians on board.
