In the USA, the mummy of a man who was kept in a funeral parlor for 128 years will be buried.

The body of a man called “Stoneman Willie” has been lying for more than a century in Reading, Pennsylvania, according to Reuters and The Washington Post.

The man had an alcohol addiction and died of kidney failure in the local prison on November 19, 1895, where he was serving a sentence for pickpocketing.

He was accidentally mummified by undertaker Theodore Auman, who was experimenting with new methods of embalming, according to Auman’s Funeral Home.

Because the man gave a false name at the time of his arrest, the identity of “Stoneman Willie” remained unknown for years, and local authorities were unable to locate his relatives.

The funeral home asked the state for permission to keep the body instead of burying it to observe the experimental embalming process.

Subsequently, the identity of “Stoneman Willie” was identified with the help of historical documents.

The funeral home will reveal his name later in the week, when the body will be laid to rest. Until now, only the man’s Irish roots were known for sure.

“We don’t call him mummy. We call him our friend Willie. He’s just become such an ‘icon’, a legendary part of not just Reading’s past, but its present.”said funeral home director Kyle Blankenbiller.

According to local historian George M. Mazer XI, the body was preserved by undertaker Theodore Aumann, who at the time was experimenting with an innovative method of embalming arteries.

This technique was still relatively new at the end of the 19th century, when corpses were often kept on ice until burial.

However, the undertaker overdid it with formalin, so “Stoneman Willy” was petrified.

The method of preserving the body turned out to be effective – the mummy “survived” even the undertaker Auman and became part of urban legends.

A funeral will be held on October 7, with a procession taking “Stoneman Willie” to Forest Hills Memorial Park for burial.

The man will be dressed in a tuxedo, “as befits a gentleman since 1895,” the funeral home says.

We will remind, 5 years ago in Ukraine they still embalmed the body of surgeon Mykola Pirogov, despite the opposition of the head of the Ministry of Health, Ulyana Suprun, and some Ukrainians.

The scientist’s body has been stored in the sarcophagus of the crypt of the Mykolaiv Church-tomb for more than 140 years. Before that, he was embalmed in 1994, 2000, 2005 and 2011.
