“Wanted to enroll a beaver cub in kindergarten”: stories of saving beavers that were lost during the spring migration

Ukrainian animal rights activists are increasingly rescuing beavers that enter “human” territories during spring migration. The stories of the rescue of rodents were told at the Kyiv Animal Rescue Group, the Center for the Rescue of Wild Animals and the State Emergency Service. The capital team of animal rescuers KARG saved 9 beavers in the last month alone. All the animals “went about their various business” and accidentally got into trouble or ended up in the territory where people live. “This is the spring migration of beavers, when they settle in other reservoirs. They can accidentally get lost, enter the city, scare people,” said KARG senior rescuer Mykhailo Storozhuk in a comment to “UP. Life”. The Kyiv team saved 9 beavers in the last month. One of the rodents was spotted in Obukhov near a kindergarten. “Beaver heard about preschools and decided to use the opportunity to enroll his children. Otherwise, it is difficult to explain the presence of a majestic handsome man with webbed paws at six in the morning near a kindergarten in Obukhov”, – say animal rights activists. However, the police did not appreciate the animal’s intentions and called animal rescuers. In Obukhiv, the police spotted a beaver near a kindergarten Photo: KARG Another beaver was found in the village of Velyka Dymerka in the Kyiv region on April 9. The frightened animal hid under the door of the toilet next to the local supermarket, and concerned people turned to the Kyiv Animal Rescue Group for help. In Velyka Dymerka, a beaver was saved, which hid under the door of a toilet next to a local supermarket. “The beaver came to the territory of the enterprise with a very specific goal – to make money. Therefore, he sat down right next to the entrance to the public toilet and prepared to sell tickets. But the new businessman was not so lucky – the workers spoke out against such a startup and called our saviors,” animal rights activists joke. Everything is fine with the beaver, he returned to the wild. The rodent was sent to the Natalia Popova Wild Animal Rescue Center and UAnimals, where he was awaited by a veterinarian. Then the animal was returned to the natural environment. “Everything is fine with the beaver, he has returned to the wild to continue his usual beaver life,” the Rescue Center shared updates. Another beaver accidentally wandered into the yard in the village of Severynivka, Buchansky district. The owner called Kyiv Animal Rescue Group, which took the beaver to the Center. The beaver is currently under surveillance and receiving care. The fluffy guest from Severynivka is now in the Rescue Center. There were also cases when rescuers found injured rodents. On April 3, a resident of Kyiv noticed an injured beaver in his private yard in Troyeschyna. Beaver came to a private house, where he was attacked by dogs. The owner of the house drove away the dogs, fenced off the rodent from them and called the rescuers. In Troeshchyna, dogs bit a beaver, but it was saved. Photo: KARG “The team of the Kyiv Animal Rescue Group took the beaver to the reservoir and tried to release it, but it did not go. They examined it in more detail, saw the injuries and brought it to us,” says Nataliya Popova, head of the Wild Animal Rescue Center. The four-legged animal was found to have injuries on its stomach, fins and tail. Fortunately, on April 12, the furry one was released into the reservoir after recovery. The rodent was treated and returned to the reservoir. Photo: UAnimals “The beaver has recovered from his injuries and should return to the reservoir, because it is very important for these animals to be in a natural environment for full recovery,” experts explain. After all, water rodents are saved not only in the Kyiv region. Khmelnytskyi emergency workers rescued a beaver that got into the fountain. “Careful people called the rescuers and reported that in the city of Netishyn, a beaver had fallen into a non-functioning decorative fountain. The animal could not get out on its own, so rescuers and concerned townspeople came to help,” the State Emergency Service said. The frightened beaver was caught and released. What to do if you see a beaver that is stuck or lost? If you encounter any wild animal – do not approach, do not try to make friends, take selfies for social networks, etc. Any beaver will attack if you approach it closely, says Mykhailo Storozhuk. “Even if the animal is cute and fluffy, it has claws and teeth, and your sincere intentions to make friends will be perceived quite the opposite. So, most likely, such a close acquaintance will not end in anything good,” – explain animal rescuers. In the event that a wild animal is in natural conditions and appears healthy, do not prevent it from continuing to do its business. If the beaver has fallen somewhere, can’t get out through the fence or has suffered some other calamity, call the rescuers immediately. The Kyiv Animal Rescue Group team can be called at 098-844-79-37. You can also call the local authorities (regional department of ecology, State Environmental Inspection), the police, the State Emergency Service. The animal protection organization UAnimals also joins the rescue of animals. Read also: How Kyivans saved a beaver from a poacher. PHOTO
