“We must also go this way”: the ombudsman on the introduction of civil partnerships

Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, believes that the parliament will adopt a draft law on civil partnerships, which will allow same-sex relationships to be legalized. He told about this in an interview for Radio Svoboda. The ombudsman stated that the impetus for the creation of the draft law on registered partnerships was the ratification of the Istanbul Convention. And its adoption is a matter of time. “I feel that the position of the Ukrainian parliament, the political will is for the adoption of this draft law. I do not know when it will be brought to the floor. Will there be people’s deputies there who will do everything to prevent it from being adopted? I think they will. Will it still be accepted? I think it will be accepted,” Dmytro Lubinets shared. Photo from social networks of Dmytro Lubinets. The ombudsman also expressed his personal support for the draft law on civil partnerships. “I always say that one person’s right ends exactly where another person’s right begins. We are all different, but we are all equal. If we call ourselves Europeans, then we must also follow this path,” the Commissioner said. According to him, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi also supports the adoption of this draft law. We will remind you that in March of this year, People’s Deputy Inna Sovsun submitted a draft law on civil partnerships to the Verkhovna Rada. It provides for the official registration of partnerships, which can be used by opposite-sex and same-sex couples. According to the draft law, civil partners are equated with close relatives. They have property and inheritance rights, social protection, but cannot adopt children and take custody of them. So far, the draft law has already received the support of four committees of the Verkhovna Rada. However, the Ministry of Defense opposed its adoption.
