On January 25, the presentation of the project of the Ukrainian pavilion of the 60th Venice Biennale took place in the Khanenko Museum “Netting”. Together with the co-curator of the project Victoria Bavykina and the artists involved in it, the Acting Minister of Culture came to the presentation Rostislav Karandeev and the commissar of the pavilion Taras Shevchenko.

For the first time after the scandal with the financing of the project, members of Yevgeny assured the full support of the Ukrainian pavilion at the Venice Biennale from the state.

“The Venice Biennale of Contemporary Art is one of the leading international art forums. The Biennale has become for Ukraine not just an international cultural project, but a joint state project representing Ukraine. Convinced that Ukraine will be well represented at the 60th Venice Biennale, the Ministry of Culture “ – stressed Karandeev.

The Venice Biennale is part of a wider range of festivals dedicated to film, music and theatre. Events of this scale have not been exclusively artistic for a long time, every two years the Biennale is visited by more than a million people from all over the world, and these are not only people from the arts, but also diplomats, influential politicians and businessmen. Ukraine has been present at the Biennale since 2001. But today for us, as citizens of a country at war, every public speech abroad is an opportunity or a contribution to the knowledge of the world outside Ukraine about our war“, Victoria Bavykina said.

The theme of the 60th Venice Biennale for 2024 is “Foreigners Everywhere” (Foreigners Everywhere). This year, artists from around the world will explore the concept of the “foreigner” and focus on issues of exile and emigration, as well as “otherness”.

According to Adriano Pedrosa [головного куратора бієнале – прим. УП.Культура] the concept of “foreigners” includes all possible manifestations of otherness, which can be manifested both at the level of small communities and at the level of countries or internationally. Pedrosa says that each of us can feel like a foreigner at one point or another in our lives” – added the curator.

The exhibition of the Ukrainian pavilion is inspired by the practice of collective weaving of camouflage nets and is dedicated to support and cooperation between people. With the help of joint actions, Ukrainian society opposes Russian aggression. “Weaving of Nets” presents the works of Ukrainian artists — Katya Buchatska, Andrii Dostlev and Lia Dostleva, Daniil Revkovsky and Andriy Rachinsky and Oleksandr Burlaka.

Film “Civilians. Invasion” by Daniil Revkovskyi and Andriy Rachynskyi covers the outbreak of full-scale war through the eyes of eyewitnesses through their videos. Materials for the film – about 130 videos – were collected by the authors from open sources and YouTube channels of Ukrainian civilians. In the film, you can follow the changes from a peaceful life to the beginning of the invasion, mass shelling, evidence of burials and deaths.
